The Global STEAM Working Group is an interdisciplinary faculty group that crosses campus boundaries and focuses on the center of gravity between STEAM and the global. Our mission is to encourage faculty, students, and professionals to explore the intersection between the sciences, medicine, and engineering with global and regional questions through dialogue with the social sciences, humanities, and the arts to formulate new approaches to the global challenges of the 21st century. This is done through sharing our research, our stories, and our experiences. The Global STEAM Blog is a place for our narratives and our round-table discussions help bring our multi-disciplinary research to a wider audience.
The Global STEAM Working Group members are listed here. This includes the Steering Committee and Working Group members.
The Global STEAM Working Group is excited to share the Global STEAM Blog with our audience. Posts and narratives are published on this page that draw attention to multidisciplinary applications either in the professional world or in the academic world. We encourage members of the Urbana-Champaign campus to contribute works to this blog that invent and reinvent this space to discuss topics and draw our attention to problems or projects that are important to our global world within a STEAM context. Students are particularly encouraged to contribute their stories. For more information about our Global STEAM stories, or to contribute a piece, please contact Tim Pollack-Lagushenko (tpollack@illinois.edu), Center for Global Studies.
The IGI Global STEAM Working Group will host three discussion panels in spring 2022 around the topic of Infrastructure in Health and Environmental Inequalities. The discussions will be hosted on-line and will have multi-disciplinary panelists for each event.

The year 2020 has posed a tremendous challenge for humanity. The viral infection caused by the coronavirus known as SARS-Cov-2 has developed into a pandemic. A public health problem of such proportions has exerted an unprecedented pressure on the healthcare system of countries around the world. This crisis has revealed an imbalance of efforts from different governments that respond to priorities based on political and economic interests over the basic health necessities of their citizens, especially in the United States. If we are to fight for our survival from health-related disasters, what good is the science if we can’t apply it? You are invited to listen to specialists in a variety of fields, discussing their perspective of the influence of science and politics and the apparent antagonic relationship they appear to have in this series, we bring you a unique opportunity to participate in this forum which looks to inform and delineate the important role of STEAM at a global level.
The monthly roundtables are co-sponsored by the IGI Global STEAM Working Group and the Applied Research Institute. The Global STEAM Working Group is comprised of faculty from across campus. Departments and colleges currently represented are Illinois Global Institute, Department of History, College of Medicine, Speech and Hearing Science, Department of Chemistry, Center for Global Studies, and Grainger College of Engineering.
Please join the IGI Global STEAM Working Group for an informal follow-up discussion that focuses on the science, politics, medicine, compassion, and the ideas of globalization.
